Interview with Steve Watkins

RG360: At 25yrs old you began to take your passion for singing seriously, was there a significant event or experience that influenced your decision.

SW: “There was a time in my life when I had backslidden, and after I returned, everywhere I sang, people were giving their lives to the lord. So I decided I needed to fix up my life because people were fixing their lives from what I was doing. I also began to receive requests to sing at events, so I decided to take up singing professionally.”

RG360: “Jesus Calling”, “Gospel Medley”, and “The Bible” are very popular on the radio airwaves, what was the inspiration behind these three songs.

SW: “Jesus Calling” was written for a competition called “Talents Of Palladium” at the hotel where I work. We were asked to do a gospel song, so I decided to write a gospel version of “The rain is falling”, I love this song and it is by one of my favourite artist ‘Romain Virgo’.

” ‘The Gospel’ came about because I wanted to do a music video, to promote my first album ‘Its all about Jesus’.”

” ‘The Bible’ was written to encourage people to read the Bible, to find out what God says about what they are doing, knowing what to do and what not to do.”

RG360: Would you describe yourself as a Gospel Reggae Artist – defined as one who represents Gospel Reggae to spread the gospel.

SW: I wouldn’t describe myself as a Gospel Reggae artist, because of my versatility to sing on all genres of Gospel music. I also Deejay as well as sing which may be a surprise to many, who know me for singing.

Steve Watkins will be singing live at ‘Revive 3’, Bristol Gospel Extravaganza on the 10th August 2019 in the UK, check out revivebristol.co.uk for tickets.
